Akron Man Maced, Beaten and Robbed

Posted on 18 October 2010 by johnd

A man in Akron was sprayed with Mace, hit upside the head and robbed Friday afternoon in a seemingly random attack while taking out his garbage.

The Mace attack made it impossible for the 32 year old Stoner Street man to identify the attacker. He was taken to Akron General where he was treated for minor injuries.

As he was taking out his trash at 2 pm, the man was nailed on the back of the head with an object and sprawled to the ground. As he was down, the attacker took $160, a cell phone and his keys.

Anyone with information is asked to call Akron police at 330-375-2490. Anonymous tips for this or any crime can be made at http://ci.akron.oh.us/ASP/tip.html.

Akron Nuclear Power Plant Shut Down for Fuel

Posted on 07 October 2010 by johnd

FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., announced its Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 in Shippingport, Pennsylvania, shut down earlier today for scheduled refueling and maintenance.

While off line, 60 out of the 157 fuel assemblies will be exchanged and safety inspections conducted. As part of the process, one of three reactor coolant pump motors will be replaced for added reliability, and routine maintenance work will be performed on valves, pumps and electrical systems.

Some 1,000 temporary contractors and FENOC employees from the company’s other nuclear plants will supplement the Beaver Valley workforce during the outage.

The 911-megawatt plant operated safely and reliably for 500 consecutive days and generated more than 10 million megawatt-hours of electricity since the completion of its last refueling in May 2009. The plant also posted an industry-leading forced-loss rate of 0.00 percent during the past 18 months of operation.

FirstEnergy is a diversified energy company headquartered in Akron, Ohio. Its FENOC subsidiary also operates the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio, and the Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Perry, Ohio.
